HAPPY NEW YEAR !

I don't know about you but I can't believe it is 2009 - it seems like only yesterday we were all worried about Y2K!

Here are some my my faves from our kid friendly New Years Party!

What an exciting year 2008 was - I can't wait to see what 2009 has in store. For our family I am sure it will include a fair bit of Hockey and Lacrosse! I can't wait for the Spring - we are hopefully going to be going to Halifax on a Family Holiday - I can't wait to get some great shots!

As some of you may have noticed for 2009 my session fee has gone up a wee bit - it is now $100. But as always this will still allow you the personalized attention that a professional photographer can give - we are free to explore what the session has to offer and we are not ruled by a clock.

I found an article over the holidays that helps explain it all (copied with permission from http://www.professionalchildphotographer.com)

The photographic art you choose to place on your wall is ultimately the result of the vision of the photographer. This vision, coupled with what you wear to your session, the environment, the lighting, even the mood the subjects are in at the time of photographing creates the work that you will want to proudly display on your walls forevermore.
Your first step in the process is more about determining who you are, who your family is and then seeking a photographer that reflects your style. For instance let’s say your family is extremely outdoorsy and loves playing on the beach. You start determining what style you like, browse through photography website portfolios and determine if any of the styles exhibited there would be a good fit with your life and family style. You have already determined that you should probably seek out a beach type photographer (that is if you live near a beach) and then begin narrowing the field down a bit.

Finally after a bit of Internet research, you have narrowed it down to two photographers who do what seems like solid work, the sort of outdoor beach look you desire. It is now time to ask yourself: Do you like photographer A’s style over photographer B’s style? Is it because the people in the images of A’s style are having a great time and it seems very caught up in the moment vs. B photographer more posed, looking in the camera images? If this is a case, you probably like LIFESTYLE photography or perhaps even take it a step further and define your desired style as a PHOTOJOURNALISTIC photography style. The photographer you probably should choose is photographer A because their style is very similar to the style you desire.

What custom photography ultimately is all about is choice and experience (as in THE experience). Custom photography is about finding someone who will photograph your family, give you devoted 1:1 attention without worry of the next ‘in line’ or the feeling of a crowded portrait studio. A custom photographer will typically show you a fairly extensive gallery culled to only show the good images that meet the photographers’ creative sensibilities. Often the images are fully edited images-color corrected with blemishes and undereye circles removed. Custom photographers are also known as boutique studios, offering a range of products and unparalleled service. Think Lexus vs. Hyundai, think Nordstrom vs. WalMart.

Custom photography should have you, the client and your experience in mind.

TIME of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:

Approaching it from a time standpoint, for instance let’s imagine if you will that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love and that is travelling an hour to your on location session. Time break down:

session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)
one hour travel time TO session
15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home
90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject
one hour travel time FROM session
30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer
30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images
2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images
1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering
2-3 hours time with client for ordering images
1 hour sorting through and checking order
30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery
30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped
any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues
As you can see, average client time for a session ranges from just under 13 hours to 19 hours dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to your session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.

Babee Clipeez

As many of you know I am a member of a wonderful Mom's Chat Board and so very often mom's are "giving birth" to new businesses. The other week I was introduced to Sara from Babee Clipeez - and let me tell you I so wish I had a wee girl to put these beautiful Clipeez in her hair - somehow I think the boys would get some funny looks with pink clipeez in their hair!

Sara is currently a stay-at-home mom to a beautiful girl. She has always enjoyed crafts and has prided herself at being very thrifty! When she decided that her little one's out of control hair needed some clips to tame it she decided to make my own.

Because of the quality and beautiful product friends started asking for them... and even better wanting pay for them! Thus Babee Clipeez was born...

Each of the clips are made by hand with 1 3/4'' alligator clips. They have a no-slip insert to prevent them from slipping out of even the finest hair! They are great for babies and young girls. there are many beautiful designs to choose from and if you don't find exactly what you are looking for Sara will even hunt down any style or pattern you need or want.

Feel free to Email Sara at clipeez@live.ca for more information

The Good Ol' Hockey Game

Hockey captures the essence of Canadian experience in the New World.
In a land so inescapably and inhospitably cold, hockey is the chance of
life, and an affirmation that despite the deathly chill of winter we are
alive.
~Stephen Leacock

I never thought I of all people would be a "Hockey Mom" but here I am 12 months into my induction into this wonderful and exciting world. I can't wait till this Saturday at 7:00 AM I get the opportunity to photograph all the kids from our boys hockey league - that's 400+ kids - so if you don't hear from me over the next few weeks - I am OK - I am just busing editing and getting all those smiling faced photo's back to all the hockey mom's and dad's out there. Feel free to take pity on my hubby and kids - they may need fed!

Game On!

Heather
Ok I have been really bad the past few weeks - I have neglected my blog for a bit - but I have a good excuse - HMH Photography have been crazy busy. I think my kids have even forgotten what I look like to be honest. But It has been worth it - I have met so many wonderful families and forged some lasting relationships.

Here is a quick look at some of the special smiles we have captured over the past few weeks.

Enjoy,

Heather

It is far too warm to be FALL!

Who would think that on Thanksgiving weekend we would be in capri's and light tops. We had a very busy weekend - on Saturday we had dinner with my Mum, Dad, Brother's and their families - it is just amazing that a family that once was 5 is now 10 people strong! On Sunday we went to my Mother In Law's and the boys had a blast on the ATV and playing in the Corn Field (good thing they have never seen Children of the Corn) then on Monday we went to my Father In Laws and went to the Norwood Fair with my Brother In Law and his family - I think Logan is still recovering from the Avalanche Ride!

Thought I would share some moments I captured over the weekend.

Reminder to all my wonderful clients - Christmas is going to be upon us real soon - time is running out for those wonderful Family Photos - great insert for the Christmas Cards and for Christmas Presents.

Take Care, God Bless
